Overview

The Emberwild Dominion lies in the central south, at the crossroads between the lands of Ironroot Bastion and the Auric Exchange of Pyprast Bastion. It is home to the people of the Emberwild Dominion, commonly known as the Wilders, and to the elite order known as the Riders of the Emberwild Dominion.

Their realm includes coastal cities on the plains, volcanic lowlands, and settlements built high above the clouds upon mountains and central plateaus.

Though often reserved and watchful, the people of Emberwild are deeply learned in volcanic forces, environmental balance, and the movement of land, water, heat, and air.

History

The islands of the Emberwild Dominion were once an unpopulated island realm in the central west of the Mosaic Archipelago. During the Pre-Sundering era, the first settlers came among its volcanic atolls, peaks, steep cliffs, and high plateaus.

Using their abilities and technology, the Pre-Sundering peoples raised lava flows from deep below and expanded the lower flat lands, allowing the molten stone to cool in the ocean. In this way they created fertile flat territory and additional islands that became safe havens for settlement.

As more of the people moved to the lower lands, the high plateaus became less populated and in time became ideal nesting grounds for the griffon.

Among the early settlers were learners and observers who wished to better understand the nature of volcanic flows, magnetic crystals, and the shaping of land. These scholars became emissaries of Emberwild, teaching the wider Aethorian peoples how lava and crystal magnetism could be harnessed with care.

In time they became known as the Emberwild Dominion — literally, the people of the cooling fire.

The Legacy of the Pre-Sundering

Today the Emberwild Dominion remains a living museum of the Pre-Sundering peoples who first settled these lands. Their descendants preserve ancient techniques of land-raising, crystal resonance, and volcanic guidance.

They continue to help develop lands across Aethoria, especially in places where coastlines, volcanic regions, and unstable terrain can be shaped into safe and fertile ground.

The Temple to the Griffon

On the northernmost part of the Emberwild Dominion stands the Temple to the Griffon, a religious centre and meeting house for major cultural and governmental events.

It is also home to the Veylborn messenger known as The Lava Orchestrator, one of the four Veylborn of Lava who dwell in ancient temples established around protruding crystals of immense magnetic power.

The temple remains a sacred and symbolic centre of Emberwild identity.

Philosophy

The people of the Emberwild Dominion are reserved, wise, and deliberate. They interfere only when they judge it necessary — when a message must be carried, when knowledge must be shared, or when help is truly needed.

Years of observing from the heights above the clouds have taught them to gather information first, seek clarity, and act with mindful discretion.

Though they may appear distant, they are always willing to aid those in genuine need.

Geography of the Emberwild Dominion

The lands of the Emberwild Dominion are a series of lava-created skirts, terraces, and raised landmasses built around mountains that once rose almost straight from the ocean to weathered plateaus in the sky.

The old settlements continue serenely amidst the clouds, sustained by heat and energy once harnessed through Pre-Sundering magnetic forces. The main continent and surrounding islands form a blend of natural beauty and mystical wonder, though much of the land is geologically young.

Plants and animals were transplanted or spread from nearby lands, and so many species reflect the life of neighboring Crestrealms, though adapted to volcanic soils and unusual climates.

Grassy Fields

The rolling grassy fields of the lowlands stretch across fertile volcanic soils and are dotted with wildflowers. These fields provide open land for agriculture, grazing, and settlement, offering calm and beauty beneath the high volcanic plateaus.

Crystalline Forest

One of the most enchanting places in the Dominion is the Crystalline Forest, a magical valley carved into stone where blue crystals rise like thick trees.

Their trunks and branches shimmer like polished gemstones, and their leaves sparkle in the sunlight. The mossy forest floor glows faintly by night, making the valley a place of beauty, reverence, and study, especially for healers from Pyrathis.

Cloud Lake

High in the interior lies Cloud Lake, a serene body of water that appears to float among the clouds — an illusion caused by moisture, altitude, and light.

The lake is fed by a powerful waterfall descending from still higher peaks and plateaus. Gentle mist surrounds the waters, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

Its clear waters are believed to have healing properties and are bottled by Pyrathian healers for medicine and ritual use.

Flora and Fauna

The Emberwild Dominion contains limited life compared with older realms, simply because it is a newly colonised ecosystem. Much of the flora and fauna were invasive or transplanted before the new lands were fully raised and settled.

Common creatures include griffons, scaleapons, and the small winged snow possum.

Highlanders and Lowlanders

Emberwild society is divided between the lowland dwellers of the coastal plains and the people of the highlands above the clouds. This separation is practical as well as cultural, shaping different ways of life while still binding both groups to a common identity.

Riders of the Emberwild Dominion

The Riders of the Emberwild Dominion are an elite order among the people of Emberwild, renowned for their dedication to communication, travel, diplomacy, and the transfer of knowledge.

Their capital city is Pyrathis, built near the volcanic heart of their dominion. The riders are partnered with Hertorgs, griffon-like creatures that have formed a deep symbiotic bond with them.

The partnership benefits both. The Hertorgs gain easier access to food, care, and reduced nesting burdens, while the riders gain a majestic and powerful means of transport between islands and continents.

Training the Riders

Training to become a Rider of the Emberwild Dominion is arduous and begins at a young age. Prospective riders must learn the ways of the Hertorg and build a bond that often lasts for the lifetime of the griffon.

Riders must understand the creature’s needs and behavior, including daily feeding, grooming, and providing the space needed for exercise and flight.

Messengers of the Skies

The importance of the messages carried by the riders cannot be overstated. They transport vital information between continents and islands and serve as the lifeline of communication in times of peace and conflict alike.

Their skill in navigation, diplomacy, and aerial travel makes them figures of great reverence throughout Aethoria.

Water and Survival

The Emberwild Dominion also learned to build lava cloud condensers, remarkable devices capable of producing and filtering water from moisture in the air and even from salty ocean sources.

These systems provide recyclable and clean water supplies even in places without rivers, making life possible across the volcanic heights and recently raised lands of the dominion.

Guiding Truth of the Emberwild Dominion

With fire we test the gold, and with gold we test the servants.

In Emberwild, wisdom is proven not by haste, but by patient strength, measured judgment, and faithful service.
