The Verdant Expanse

Geography

The Expanse occupies the central tropical region of the northern continent. Its lands are shaped by:

• Dense tropical rainforests
• Flowering fungal groves
• High canopy ecosystems
• Warm inland rivers
• Shallow fertile lowlands along the Ironroot border

Two great rivers descend from the mountains of Ironroot Bastion, flowing southward into the forests. One, the Mileasy River, feeds the immense Lake Mostarya, upon whose shores the capital city rests. The other, the Bendy River, flows all the way to the port city of Connection.

These rivers provide the only natural corridors through the otherwise dense jungle. Most travel within the Expanse occurs along the waterways or through carefully maintained forest paths.

Capital City — Mostarya

Mostarya is built along the shores of the great lake fed by the northern river. Unlike the stone cities of Ironroot or the engineered towers of the Mechanum Ascendancy, Mostarya is constructed almost entirely within the living forest itself.

Traditional homes and halls are woven among enormous trees. Platforms and bridges connect branches far above the ground. Water gardens drift across the surface of the lake. The city’s architecture grows with the forest as it expands back into the floor and canopy above.

Healers from across Aethoria travel here to study the vast medicinal knowledge gathered from the surrounding jungle.

Early History

Before the Sundering, the peoples of the Verdant Expanse lived almost entirely nomadic lives. The forests provided everything they required:

• Fruits
• Medicinal plants
• Fresh water
• Shelter
• Hunting grounds

Permanent settlements only emerged when population growth required more stable gathering areas. Even then, most Verdant communities remained small and deeply connected to the land around them.

Their reluctance to settle large cities made the Verdant peoples historically wary of outsiders, and for many centuries they had little contact with other Crestrealms. In the modern era, however, trade and knowledge exchange have slowly opened their borders.

Trade and the City of Connection

On the eastern coast lies the Verdant Expanse’s primary port city: Connection. The name reflects its purpose — the place where the isolated forests meet the wider world.

Trade routes from Ironroot often reach Connection by following the northern lowlands where forest density thins and small trading towns dot the borderlands.

However, the port itself faces difficult seas. Strong currents from the Central Ocean surge northward along the coast, and storms rolling westward frequently make the harbour treacherous. Because of this, maritime trade from Connection remains limited compared to inland trade with Ironroot.

The Forest Bounty

Sweet Bells

Tall canopy flowers that hang like golden bells from upper branches. They drip a thick honey-like nectar that is harvested by climbers and tree-dwelling creatures.

Guada Fruit

A dense, crunchy fruit with a surprising natural saltiness. Easy to harvest and highly nutritious, Guada helped sustain many early pre-Sundering peoples of the forest.

The Great Mushroom Groves

Entire regions of towering fungal growth where mushrooms grow to the size of large animals and rival the mushrooms of the Bordrad Marshes. Many contain rare medicinal compounds prized by Healers.
