in the simple way children tell it. They are the beings who remain where knowledge must survive.
Born of the Veil Between Worlds
Long before the Great Sundering fractured Aethoria into Crestrealms and continents around the Mosaic Islands,
before crystal economies rose and fell, and before even the first libraries were carved from stone, there existed
a boundary known only in whispered theory and fragmented texts.
This boundary is called the Veil. The Veil is not a place one can travel to. It is the seam between
existence itself — between past, present, and future. It is the silent interval between moments, the unseen structure
that allows time, memory, and reality to coexist without collapsing into chaos.
From this Veil emerged the beings now known as the Veylborn.
Nature of the Veylborn
Veylborn exist partially within the Veil and partially within the physical world. They are not bound to a single moment,
nor fully anchored to a single location. Their presence in the physical realm is always incomplete, like a reflection
that exists both in the mirror and in the observer.
They are most commonly drawn to places of high etheric density, especially regions abundant in aethoria trees,
crystal formations, ancient knowledge repositories, and sites of significant historical continuity.
For this reason, the Mosaic Islands — and especially Kefar Island, where the great crystal of the city stands —
have long served as one of their strongest anchors in the physical world. Where crystals store energy and aethoria
trees store life, the Veil finds stability. And where the Veil finds stability, the Veylborn can manifest.
Appearance and Manifestation
In their most unanchored state, a Veylborn appears as a shifting concentration of luminous mist and light —
a floating convergence of golden, blue, or white etheric energy. This form is not their true body, but rather
the closest physical approximation possible when no stronger anchor exists.
However, Veylborn possess the rare ability to stabilise their manifestation by adopting consistent forms.
These forms are not disguises, but anchors — chosen shapes that allow them to exist more coherently within
physical reality. Most Veylborn appear vaguely human in structure, though never entirely so. Their edges blur.
Their movement flows, or flickers, or shifts in small impossibilities that make sensible scholars very uncomfortable.
Some retain stable forms for centuries. Among the most well-known is the Chief Librarian of the Astryx Arcanum:
Master Minz.
Crystal and Aethoria Resonance
Veylborn are intrinsically connected to aethoria trees and crystal formations. Crystals serve as anchors of energy.
Aethoria trees serve as anchors of life. Together, they create regions where the Veil grows thinner and more stable,
allowing Veylborn to manifest more clearly and remain longer within physical space.
This is why they are most frequently encountered on Kefar Island, home to the Astryx Arcanum, the great aethoria trees,
and the largest crystal exchange in Aethoria. Where crystal and knowledge coexist, the Veylborn endure.
Adaptive Form and Human Bonding
Though not dependent on mortals, Veylborn sometimes form lasting bonds with individuals whose actions significantly shape
knowledge, balance, or continuity. When this occurs, the Veylborn’s manifestation may stabilise further, becoming clearer,
more defined, and more consistent over time.
Their form reflects not the physical traits of their companion, but their purpose, focus, and place within the unfolding
continuity of the world. These bonds are rare and considered permanent. Even after death, the Veylborn remembers.
Purpose and Role in Aethoria
The Veylborn exist wherever knowledge must endure. They safeguard libraries. They preserve artefacts. They ensure
that the chain of memory remains unbroken. Without them, countless discoveries, histories, and truths would have
vanished long ago.
They are never rulers. They are not servants. They are keepers.
Rarity and Decline
In ancient eras, Veylborn manifestations were more common. But as wars, corruption, and the Sundering fractured the world,
many anchors of continuity were destroyed. When a place of knowledge is erased completely, its Veylborn anchor fades.
Some withdrew fully into the Veil. Some remain, barely visible. And a very few, like Master Minz, endure in places
where knowledge still thrives.
